Aubrey Plaza appeared to let slip the gender of her unborn baby at the Tribeca Festival premiere of her new film, The Accompanist, on June 4. The 41-year-old actress, who is expecting her first child with partner Chris Abbott, was seen on the red carpet reuniting with co-star Susan Sarandon.
In footage from the event, Sarandon gushed over Plaza's baby bump before the mother-to-be lifted her top, with Sarandon blocking her bare belly from photographers. Sarandon then seemed to ask the gender, to which Plaza appeared to reply: 'It's a girl.'
Plaza confirmed in April that she is expecting her first child in the fall with Abbott, with whom she has largely kept her relationship private. The couple first worked together on the 2020 film Black Bear before co-starring in the off-Broadway play Danny and the Deep Blue Sea in 2023-2024.
The baby news comes more than a year after the death of Plaza's estranged husband, director Jeff Baena, who died at age 47 in January 2025. Plaza and Baena married in 2021 and quietly separated in September 2024. Following his death, Plaza and his family released a joint statement calling it an 'unimaginable tragedy.'
Plaza has spoken candidly about her grief, telling former co-star Amy Poehler on the Good Hang podcast that she feels 'very grateful to be moving through the world' but acknowledges a 'giant ocean of just awfulness' that is always present.
