Asda Introduces 700 On-Site Laundrettes to Enhance Customer Convenience
Asda is transforming the shopping experience by integrating laundry services into its stores nationwide. In a strategic collaboration with ME Group, the supermarket giant is rolling out 700 on-site laundrettes, allowing customers to combine their weekly food shop with washing and drying clothes.
Expanding Services Across Store Formats
The new laundry facilities will be available at Asda Supercentres, Superstores, supermarkets, and Express locations. Each site will feature 9kg and 20kg washing drums, along with high-speed drying equipment. These services will operate 24/7, providing flexibility for customers to manage laundry at any time of day.
Joseph Sutton, Vice President of Asda Express, foodservice, and fuel, emphasized the initiative's goal: "We're always looking for new ways to make life easier for the customers who shop with us, particularly by strengthening the breadth of services that meet their needs under one roof." He added that this large-scale rollout offers a quick, convenient, and value-driven solution for tackling laundry while shopping.
Partnership with ME Group
ME Group, a global provider of self-service equipment, brings extensive experience to this partnership. Vladimir Crasneanscki, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of ME Group, noted: "Asda is a perfect company to partner with, their retail and petrol stations are excellent locations for our services." Currently, ME Group operates over 7,600 Wash.ME laundry machines across 12 countries, including 1,500 in the UK.
Context Amid Economic Pressures
This launch comes as consumers face rising costs due to global economic challenges. Sebrina McCullough, director of external relations at Money Wellness, warned that escalating energy prices, partly driven by international conflicts like the Iran war, could trigger a second wave of the cost-of-living crisis. She highlighted that food prices might increase by 5 to 9 percent, impacting staple items such as bread, dairy, and meat.
McCullough explained: "Rising energy prices risk triggering a second wave of the cost of living crisis, just as many households were starting to regain control of their finances." She noted that disposable income has dropped by an average of £79 between 2023 and 2025, potentially leading to more households requiring food bank referrals.
Benefits for Customers
Asda's initiative aims to alleviate some burdens by offering a practical, time-saving service. Customers can now efficiently handle two essential chores in one trip, reducing the need for separate laundry outings. This move aligns with broader retail trends focused on enhancing convenience and value for shoppers during economically uncertain times.
The rollout underscores Asda's commitment to innovation in customer service, providing an integrated solution that meets everyday needs while adapting to evolving consumer demands.
