Aldi has slashed the price of its Vaucluse red wine to £4.99, down from £8.99, with the offer running until Tuesday. The Southern Rhône blend has drawn comparisons to bottles retailing at £65, with wine expert Sam Caporn calling it her “favourite Aldi wine of the week to date so far this year.”
Expert praise and festive pairing
Caporn, who first tried the wine at an Aldi press tasting, described the Grenache-dominated blend as “very charming,” highlighting flavours of raspberry, red cherries and plum. She added: “It’s just really juicy, it’s quite refreshing, there’s no really hard tannins. That is just a really lovely glass of wine available now for the week for under a fiver.”
With Christmas approaching, she suggested the wine could suit festive dinners, noting it would be “a really good match with turkey.” The comparison to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which can be bought at Mr Wheeler for £65, was echoed by another influencer, Affordable Wine Writer, who said: “If you like Châteauneuf-du-Pape you will love this. It’s made just up the road and is a very similar style.”
Shoppers respond to the deal
The recommendation appears to have prompted a response from shoppers, with followers commenting “On my way now” and “Think I’ll be filling my boots!”, while another said they had “just bought 6 bottle[s].”
Aldi’s most viral wine moment previously came when experts compared its Pierre Jaurant Bordeaux red to Château Mouton Rothschild, a luxury wine enjoyed by celebrities like David Beckham that can retail for up to £3,000 a bottle — for a fiver. The Vaucluse offer remains available only until Tuesday at the reduced price.
