Budget Ice Cream Showdown
With UK temperatures nearing 40°C this summer, finding an affordable way to cool down is a priority. Senior Lifestyle Writer Andrew Nuttall compared Aldi and Lidl's bargain ice cream alternatives to the classic Magnum, which typically costs around £3.50 per box. Both supermarket versions cost significantly less, with Aldi's four-pack at £1.79 (44p each) and Lidl's six-pack at £2.69 (45p each).
Aldi's Offering
Aldi's ice creams were slightly cheaper per unit and offered more variety, including white chocolate and almond-infused options at the same price. However, the taste fell short: the chocolate had a nice flavour, but the ice cream lacked a real vanilla kick, tasting more like plain milk.
Lidl's Version
Lidl's pack cost more overall but included two extra ice creams. The size was nearly identical to Aldi's. The chocolate had a decent snap and flavour, while the ice cream had a strong vanilla taste. According to Nuttall, "I'd go so far as to say these were on par, if not better, than Magnums."
Verdict
Despite Aldi's lower per-unit price, Lidl's superior taste makes it the better value. Nuttall concluded that Lidl's ice creams could convert him long-term, especially during heatwaves when supermarket freezers are cleared.
