Major High Street Retailers Announce Widespread Store Closures Across the UK
This week has seen a significant wave of store closures confirmed by prominent high street chains, with 43 outlets set to shut their doors. The closures impact major retailers including TG Jones (formerly WHSmith), Matalan, Lakeland Leather, Quiz, and BrewDog, reflecting ongoing challenges in the retail sector driven by declining sales, rising costs, and shifting consumer habits.
TG Jones (Formerly WHSmith) Faces Significant Closure Risk
Approximately 80 TG Jones outlets, which previously operated under the WHSmith brand, are at high risk of closure following a period of diminished sales. The proposals are currently in initial stages, with negotiations with landlords over rent expected to influence the final number of closures. Modella's £40 million acquisition of WHSmith's high street outlets last year was its largest transaction, overseeing nearly 1,000 shops and more than 10,000 employees. However, increased taxes and inflation have led to almost 300 shop closures and over 2,000 redundancies, particularly affecting brands like The Original Factory Shop and Claire's Accessories.
A spokesman for Modella stated: "The economic conditions for all retail businesses are tough. The combination of cost inflation, weak consumer confidence and adverse Government fiscal policies puts significant pressure on all retailers. Against this backdrop, the management of TG Jones is working hard to turn around this important retail business, and they are drawing on the best available advice in doing so. TG Jones' management and Modella Capital are committed to building a sustainable future for this important UK business."
Matalan Announces Two Store Closures as Part of Redevelopment Plans
Fashion chain Matalan, with over four decades of trading and more than 200 outlets nationwide, has confirmed the closure of two stores on March 7. The affected locations are in Colne and Carlisle. The Colne site at the North Valley Retail Park will close permanently, while the Carlisle closure is part of a major redevelopment scheme to transform the retail park into a new southern gateway for Carlisle station.
A spokesperson for Matalan said: "Our priority now is to support our colleagues. We have thoroughly enjoyed serving customers at the retail park and hope they will continue to shop with us at our nearby Accrington or Blackburn stores." Despite these closures, Matalan is planning 40 shop refurbishments for 2026, following a £25 million investment last year that saw upgraded locations outperforming the wider network by 14% in sales.
Lakeland Leather Shuts Three Branches Amid Trading Challenges
Lakeland Leather is closing three of its 15 branches across the UK, with one shop in Scotland and two in northern England affected. The business, established in Cumbria in 1955 and trading for 71 years, faces difficulties as consumers increasingly shift to online shopping and cheaper fast fashion options. One branch in Carlisle closed after its lease expired in January, with a major clearance sale to shift remaining stock. The Kendal outlet in northern England and the Gretna branch in Scotland at the Caledonia Park retail centre are also set to close.
A source at Felldale Retail, which operates Lakeland Leather outlets, commented: "Like many retailers, we are operating within an increasingly challenging trading environment, with rising costs and lower footfall continuing to impact parts of the high street."
Quiz Enters Administration with Final Clearance Sales
UK fashion retailer Quiz has introduced a "final clearance" sale, offering 40% off all footwear and at least 30% off dresses after entering administration last month. The chain, run by the Ramzan family, operates stores throughout the UK, including 11 in Scotland, 13 in England, one in Wales, and 11 in Ireland (including Northern Ireland). While a full list of closures hasn't been published, multiple outlets have been confirmed to close, including sites in Essex, Norwich, and Basingstoke.
Alistair McAlinden, Interpath Scotland head and joint administrator, stated: "As we continue to explore options for the business, we would encourage shoppers to visit their nearest stores, with further discounts available on all remaining stock."
BrewDog Closes 38 Bars Despite Recent Acquisition
BrewDog has announced it will shut 38 of its bars, resulting in 484 redundancies, despite being acquired by American company Tilray Brands in a £33 million transaction. The acquisition covered BrewDog's global brand, its UK brewery, and 11 of its establishments in the UK and Ireland. However, BrewDog's 18 franchise bars in the UK and other nations will remain operational.
These closures highlight the broader economic pressures facing the retail and hospitality sectors, with hundreds of job losses anticipated and customers likely to witness final stock clearances and reorganised retail networks in the coming months.
