UNISON Lanarkshire Health Branch has pledged to support and protect its members following the Scottish Government's rejection of the business case for a new University Hospital Monklands. The union acknowledged that the decision would cause significant concern for staff, patients, and the wider Lanarkshire community.
Background of the Decision
Health Secretary Angela Constance announced last week that the estimated £2.1 billion cost of the new hospital in Wester Moffat, Airdrie, could not be justified within the current financial landscape. The announcement was made just 30 minutes before the Scottish Parliament entered its two-month summer recess.
The planned facility was intended to replace the ageing University Hospital Monklands, which has been subject to ongoing operational challenges. Constance stated that while the case for replacement is well established, the full business case submitted by NHS Lanarkshire could not be approved in its current form.
Union's Response
A UNISON Lanarkshire Health Branch spokesman said: "For years, staff have been working in increasingly challenging conditions while continuing to deliver outstanding care and support services. Many had hoped that a new hospital would provide the modern facilities, improved working environments, and enhanced patient experience that our communities deserve."
The spokesman added: "The suspension of the project raises understandable questions about the future of healthcare provision in Lanarkshire, the condition of the current hospital estate, and the impact on the staff who continue to work tirelessly every day within the existing University Hospital Monklands."
UNISON emphasised its commitment to protecting members' interests, health, safety, and wellbeing. The union plans to seek clarity from NHS Lanarkshire and the Scottish Government regarding the implications of the decision and will challenge any proposals that negatively impact staff, services, or patient care.
Next Steps
Ms Constance indicated that a redesign of the hospital will be expedited, with a decision expected as early as possible in 2027. A public meeting to discuss the development is scheduled for Thursday, July 2, between 7pm and 9pm at Airdrie Working Men's Club.
UNISON encouraged members with concerns about working conditions, health and safety, or service delivery to contact the branch. The spokesman stated: "No concern is too small, and we want to ensure that members' voices are heard and represented at every stage."
The union vowed to continue campaigning for investment that both staff and the people of Lanarkshire deserve.
