With school holidays underway across most of the UK, families are seeking affordable entertainment options. A trip to the cinema is a popular choice, but the cost of snacks purchased inside can quickly add up. While many moviegoers attempt to bring their own refreshments, cinema policies vary significantly. We have examined the rules at five major UK cinema chains, which operate a total of 348 locations nationwide.
Vue: Flexible Policy on Outside Snacks
Vue, one of the largest cinema chains in the UK with 94 locations and over 900 screens, allows visitors to bring their own food and drinks. However, the company explicitly bans hot food and alcohol. According to its guest admissions policy: 'Guests may not bring or consume any hot food or alcohol purchased outside of the premises.' The chain also advises on its website: 'Feel free to bring your own food and drink with you, but leave the hot food and alcohol at home.'
ODEON: Most Cinemas Allow Outside Snacks with Exceptions
ODEON operates 102 cinemas and is generally relaxed about customers bringing their own snacks and drinks. The company states on its website: 'We have a fantastic range of cinema classics like popcorn, hot dogs and our famous nachos available to buy in cinema, but we do allow guests to bring in their own snacks and drinks.' However, it prohibits heated food, pungent food, and alcoholic drinks from outside. Customers unsure about specific items are advised to ask a team member. Notably, the ODEON Islington Luxe & Dine does not permit any outside food.
Cineworld: Strict Policy on Hot Food and Alcohol
Cineworld, which has 87 locations, enforces a strict policy against externally purchased hot food or alcohol. Its website states: 'Cineworld have a strict no externally purchased hot food or alcohol policy, and we reserve the right to refuse customers entry into the screens with hot food or alcohol bought outside the premises.' The chain encourages customers to enjoy its wide range of in-house offerings, including popcorn, hot dogs, and nachos.
Showcase: Restrictions on Hot Food, Alcohol, and Glass Containers
Showcase, with 16 cinemas, allows many outside snacks but prohibits hot food, alcoholic beverages, and drinks in glass containers. The company advises: 'We do not allow guests to bring hot food, alcoholic beverages and drinks in glass containers into our buildings. We reserve the right to refuse admission.'
Everyman: No Outside Food or Drink Allowed
Everyman, operating 49 venues, has the strictest policy among the major chains. It does not permit any outside food or drinks. The company states: 'Only food and drinks purchased at the cinema are allowed into our screens.' This policy applies across all its locations.
