Sony has informed PlayStation customers in the United Kingdom that 551 films and shows purchased through its digital store will be removed from their libraries as of September. The move, attributed to content licensing agreements with distribution company StudioCanal, affects titles such as Paddington, Paddington 2, Pan's Labyrinth, Rambo 3, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.
Background of the Removal
This is not the first time Sony has removed StudioCanal content. In 2022, the company pulled 314 StudioCanal titles from libraries in Germany and Austria. The current removal affects a larger number of titles in the UK, as reported by gaming news outlet PlayStation LifeStyle. Sony previously also deleted users' Funimation digital libraries after merging the anime streaming service with Crunchyroll.
Legal and Consumer Implications
The removal has sparked outrage among customers who argue that they should receive refunds for content they purchased. However, the situation highlights that digital purchases do not grant ownership, as licensing agreements can expire. Sony may still negotiate a new deal with StudioCanal by September 1 or later, potentially restoring access. A similar incident occurred with Discovery, where Sony initially announced the removal of 1,318 seasons but later updated licensing arrangements to retain the content.
Metro has contacted Sony for comment. The company has not yet issued a statement regarding potential refunds or future licensing arrangements.
