Alan Shearer has launched a scathing attack on Chelsea after the Premier League club made an 'embarrassing' £8 million bid for Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka. The former Newcastle United striker described the offer as 'bizarre' and 'ridiculous,' given Xhaka's performance and value.
Shearer's Criticism
Speaking to Betfair, Shearer said: 'Sunderland bought Granit Xhaka for £17.5m. He was one of the best players in this Premier League last season, not only at Sunderland, but in the Premier League. And Chelsea think they can come in and offer less than half of what they bought him for and think that's acceptable? I mean, that's bizarre to me.'
Shearer continued: 'I understand that he might want to go, but if he wants to go and clearly his agent has done some talking to Chelsea, then I mean it's a pretty embarrassing bid when a year earlier they paid £17.5million and he's been one of the best players in the league. It's embarrassing from Chelsea really.'
Transfer Background
Xhaka, a Switzerland international, moved to Sunderland from Bayer Leverkusen 12 months ago for £17.5 million. He still has two years remaining on his contract and played a key role in Sunderland's seventh-place Premier League finish, which secured Europa League qualification. Sunderland also finished two points ahead of Chelsea, who ended 10th and missed out on European football.
Chelsea's new manager, Xabi Alonso, worked with Xhaka at Bayer Leverkusen, fueling speculation of a reunion. However, Sunderland rejected the £8 million bid, reportedly feeling 'insulted' by the offer.
Impact and Reaction
Shearer concluded: 'I mean, they're clearly not getting him. I mean, why would you sell a player for less than half when he's been one of the best players? I mean, it's ridiculous.' The bid has drawn widespread criticism, with Sunderland fans and pundits questioning Chelsea's approach.
