Utz Quality Foods has issued a voluntary recall for specific Zapp's and Dirty brand potato chips distributed across the United States, following concerns about possible salmonella contamination. The recall was initiated after the company discovered that a seasoning ingredient—a dry milk powder sourced from a third-party supplier—may be contaminated, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Recall Details
The affected products include a variety of flavors and package sizes: Zapp's Bayou Blackened Ranch, Big Cheezy, and Salt and Vinegar chips, as well as Dirty brand Maui Onion, Salt and Vinegar, and Sour Cream and Onion chips. These items were sold nationwide. The FDA stated that no other products from Utz Quality Foods are part of this recall.
As of now, no illnesses related to the recall have been reported. Company officials noted that the seasoning tested negative for salmonella before use, but the recall was undertaken "out of an abundance of caution" following the ingredient supplier's own recall.
Health Risks
Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in individuals with weakened immune systems, such as young children, the elderly, and those with chronic conditions. In healthier people, symptoms typically include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Consumers are advised not to consume the recalled chips. Instead, they should discard them or return them to the point of purchase for a full refund. Retailers have been instructed to remove the affected products from shelves.
