Royal Mail has issued a reminder to customers that recycling bins are not considered a suitable 'safeplace' for parcel deliveries. The postal service's policy specifies that items should not be left in recycling bins, as they are not secure or weatherproof.
Safeplace Guidelines
According to Royal Mail's website, customers can set a Safeplace via the Royal Mail App to specify where parcels should be left if they are not home. The recommended Safeplace should be a secure, weatherproof area of the property, out of sight and easily accessible for posties. The company explicitly states: "Requests to place parcels in recycling bins are not considered as a Safeplace by Royal Mail."
Some companies allow customers to choose a Safeplace or a nominated neighbour when ordering. If no specific instruction is given, the postie may decide on a Safeplace based on guidelines, but only if they deem it suitable.
When Items Won't Be Left
Royal Mail will not leave items in a Safeplace if the parcel could be damaged by bad weather, requires a signature, or the location is not secure—such as a doorstep or recycling bin. Vulnerable customers are given special consideration, with posties aiming to position items in an easily accessible location.
Pet Safety Advice
Homeowners with pets are urged to ensure Royal Mail workers can deliver safely. If at home, customers should keep dogs in another room before answering the door. For those with dogs that may attack mail, Royal Mail recommends installing a wire letter receptacle to protect both the post and the postie's fingers. If that is not practical, a secure mailbox at the edge of the property is advised.
