Gateshead Council has approved plans for a new Greggs outlet in Ryton, located on Parsons Drive. The decision follows significant public support, with 36 letters backing the proposal, citing regeneration and reuse of a vacant building. Five objections were received, citing concerns about character and traffic, but planners determined the development meets council conditions.
Jobs and opening hours
The new site is expected to create 14 full-time equivalent jobs. Trading hours will be 6am to 7pm Monday to Saturday, and 8am to 6pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays. Deliveries are scheduled for 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 6pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays, in line with council conditions.
Design and approvals
The outlet will occupy over 225 square metres of space, with approved designs, signage, and shop front changes. Gateshead Council’s environmental health, waste, and transport departments raised no objections. The council’s planning report noted: “Taking all the relevant issues into account and having regard to the representations received, it is considered that, on balance, the development is acceptable in accordance with national and local planning policies and it is therefore recommended that the development is approved…”
