Nationwide Building Society has issued an update regarding a payment restriction that affects all customers, following a complaint from a frustrated customer about their local branch experience. The mutual organisation clarified that cheques cannot be deposited online, outlining alternative methods for customers.
Customer Complaint Sparks Response
The customer took to social media to urge Nationwide to modernise its services, stating: "Please catch up to the 21st century and allow cheques to be paid in online. Just travelled to my local branch, no paying in envelopes available." Nationwide responded, apologising for the lack of envelopes and explaining that while envelopes should be available, cheques can still be paid in at the counter or sent by post. The provider confirmed that online cheque deposits are not currently offered.
Available Methods for Cheque Deposits
According to the Nationwide website, customers have three options for depositing cheques:
- At a Nationwide cash machine
- Over the counter at your nearest branch
- By post
The website carries a clear warning: "Cheques cannot be paid in online." To submit a cheque by post, customers must send it directly to their nearest branch.
Details to Check Before Posting a Cheque
Before posting a cheque, customers should ensure the following details are present and correct:
- The cheque is in date
- The cheque has been signed and dated
- Both the sort code and account number have been written on the back of the cheque on the right-hand side. Nationwide will pay the cheque to the account written on the back
- The cheque includes both the words and figures on the front, and these match
Details to Include on the Cheque
Customers should write the following details on the back of each cheque, on the right-hand side only:
- The account holder's name(s)
- Your signature
- The date
- Your preferred contact number
- The sort code and account number, or savings account number
The left-hand side must be left unmarked so Nationwide can process the cheque. Failure to include all these details may result in the cheque being rejected.
Nationwide's update serves as a reminder of the current limitations on cheque deposits, urging customers to use branch services or postal methods as alternatives.
