Ellen Jenne from the Express tried four Marks and Spencer sausage rolls across the budget and premium range, and the results were surprising. The best performer was not the most costly option.
M&S British Large Sausage Rolls (£1.15) – 3/10
The cheapest option was underwhelming. The sausage-to-pastry ratio was poor, with visible air gaps. The sausage meat tasted greasy with no detectable pork flavour. The pastry was pale and uninspiring. Jenne described them as suitable only for bland palates.
M&S Collection Classic Pork Sausage Rolls (£3.40) – 8/10
This was the clear winner. The deep golden pastry was generously filled with seasoned sausage meat featuring caramelised onion, ground spices, and dried herbs. The balance of succulent meat and crisp yet moist pastry was spot on. Jenne said they were the most well-rounded and satisfying, ideal for any picnic selection.
Our Best Ever Sausage Roll (£3.25) – 5/10
Despite luxurious packaging promising a gastropub experience, this roll disappointed. The meat was tasteless with only a hint of pork, and Jenne found a substantial piece of fat. Though generously filled, the flavour was lacking. At £3.25, she expected more.
M&S Collection Ultimate Sharing Sausage Roll (£5.25) – 6/10
This giant roll was packed with meat, but the pastry was slightly dry due to extended cooking time. The same spice blend as the Classic roll delivered less punch. Jenne called it a novelty item, decent for sharing but ridiculous for a solo diner.
Overall, the M&S Collection Classic Pork Sausage Rolls offered the best value and taste at £3.40, outperforming both cheaper and more expensive options.
