Lanarkshire households urged to submit meter readings before price cap rise

Lanarkshire households are being reminded to submit meter readings to their energy supplier ahead of the new Ofgem price cap coming into force on July 1. Advice Direct Scotland, which runs the national energy advice service energyadvice.scot, is urging consumers to act before midnight on June 30 to avoid being overcharged.

Why accurate meter readings matter

Accurate readings will prevent suppliers from estimating usage and applying new, higher prices to energy consumed when prices were lower. The regulator, Ofgem, resets its cap on the amount suppliers can charge every three months. The latest change, from £1,641 to £1,862, represents a 13 per cent rise on the current level and means the average dual-fuel bill will increase by £221 per year.

People who cannot submit readings before June 30 should do so as close to the date as possible. Those with smart meters should ensure the device is working. Taking a photo of the meter reading can also help to resolve any disputes that may arise.

Checking for better tariffs

Advice Direct Scotland is also urging households to check if better tariffs are available. However, many of the best-value deals are targeted at more affluent customers or those with a smart meter installed. Under July’s price cap, households are being charged more than £720 per year more than they were before the energy crisis hit in the autumn of 2021.

Advice Direct Scotland is warning that many people are still struggling with record levels of debt, and is encouraging anyone worried about bills to contact its experts for free, impartial advice. Advisers can be contacted at www.energyadvice.scot or on freephone 0808 196 8660, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Expert advice from Craig Tobin

Craig Tobin, head of business development and impact at Advice Direct Scotland, said: “July’s price cap rise is one of the largest increases since the system was brought in five years ago, and will pile on the pressure for thousands of already stretched households across Scotland.

“To avoid being overcharged, it’s important to submit meter readings before the new price cap comes into force on July 1.

“For extra peace of mind, take a dated photo of your meter, and if you have a smart meter, make sure that it is working as it should.

“People can also take practical action by examining their bills, finding out how much they are paying, and checking if there are cheaper options available with other suppliers.

“Struggling customers should know they do not have to suffer in silence. Our expert team is here for anyone who needs help, no matter their circumstances.

“Anyone experiencing difficulties should visit www.energyadvice.scot or call 0808 196 8660 for assistance.”
