DPD has issued important packaging advice for customers sending parcels, urging them to avoid reusing cardboard boxes. The delivery firm, which operates extensively across the UK, provides guidance on its website to help ensure items arrive safely.
Why Reusing Boxes Is Discouraged
According to DPD's website, people should avoid reusing cardboard boxes for transporting items. The company states: "Avoid using a carton more than once as its strength, and therefore the protection it offers, is significantly reduced when used multiple times."
When selecting a suitable carton, DPD advises customers to check that the box does not fold or bend under the weight of its contents. The firm explains: "Use good quality carton boxes that are strong and rigid. If the box bends or folds due to the weight of the contents it is not suitable. Ideally, for heavy loads, you should use carton boxes made of high-quality corrugated cardboard. These should preferably be double-walled to ensure strength, durability and protection."
Proper Packing and Sealing
Similarly, it is crucial not to underfill boxes, as reported by the Mirror. DPD notes that underfilled boxes are more prone to collapsing. All cartons must be sealed properly using shipping staples or robust tape, the experts recommend.
DPD's website adds: "To ensure a smooth journey through our sortation hubs and network, it is important the packaging is suitable for our operation. This may vary depending on the contents of your parcel. Choosing the right packaging is the first step to ensuring your items will reach their destination in good condition. You should take into consideration the weight and the type of contents within your parcel. Manufacturer packaging or product packaging alone is generally not sufficient for courier transportation as it does not provide enough protection."
Similar Advice from Parcelforce
Parcelforce offers comparable advice for customers. In its packaging guidelines, the delivery service says: "A corrugated cardboard box with a quality outer wrapping is best. Make sure the outer packaging is strong enough for the weight of the parcel. Items packed in kraft paper cannot be sent via our global express service. Please avoid reusing cardboard boxes because they weaken considerably after initial use."
The delivery service also asks customers not to use materials that could stick to sorting equipment. Guidance on the website explains: "Please ensure your items are packaged securely to prevent damage during transit. If packaging is insufficient and goods are damaged, any compensation cover may be void. To avoid delays or issues, do not use materials that stick to our sorting equipment, such as cling film, bubble wrap, string, or excessive tape." Customers should check the guidelines with their courier before sending any parcels.
