Chocolate company Spring & Mulberry has expanded a recall to include all its date-sweetened chocolate bars over fears of salmonella contamination. The voluntary recall, issued on May 8, now covers the entire line of 12 varieties sold online and in shops since August 2025.
Recall Expansion Details
The recall expansion follows an earlier one that only affected the brand's Mint Leaf bars. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated that the potential contamination likely originates from a single lot of date ingredient used in production. Spring & Mulberry's manufacturing partners, in coordination with food safety experts and the FDA, identified the dates as the most probable source.
All products included in the expanded recall have tested negative for salmonella, and no confirmed illnesses have been reported. However, customers are urged not to consume the affected items. Those who have purchased any of the recalled products should take a photo of the batch code and email it to Spring & Mulberry for a refund.
Affected Products
The recall covers the following flavours: Blood Orange, Coffee, Earl Grey, Lavender Rose, Mango Chili, Mint Leaf, Mixed Berry, Mulberry Fennel, Pecan Date, Pure Dark, Pure Dark Mini, and Sea Salt. An initial recall in January targeted the Mint Leaf flavour sold from September 15, 2025, onwards.
Spring & Mulberry, which specialises in date-sweetened, no-added-sugar dark chocolate, is not widely available in UK shops but can be found through some specialist online retailers. The impacted products were sold online and through select retail partners from August 2025. Consumers can identify them by batch or lot code, UPC number, or box colour.
Understanding Salmonella
Salmonella is a bacterial infection that causes gut inflammation and food poisoning. Symptoms include watery diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting, and fever, typically appearing 8 to 72 hours after infection. It is commonly contracted through animal-derived products like meat or dairy. Most cases resolve without treatment, but vulnerable individuals such as infants, the elderly, or those with weakened immune systems may require hospital care.
