A refuse collector has issued a warning to households that a common recycling mistake can result in bins being left unemptied. Discovering your bin is still full after collection day is frustrating, especially if your council only collects every two weeks.
The mistake that stops collection
Ashley, known online as the "No1 Binman", explained in a TikTok video that placing recycling in black bags is a frequent error. While lining general waste bins with large liners is encouraged, recycling bins should never contain black bags. Ashley captioned his video: "When you can't take a recycling bin because it has black bags in it." He added: "Recycling should be loose in the bin."
Reaction from viewers
Commenters were divided. One said: "This is exactly what is happening in my house! I just shared it with my housemates." Another argued: "It's getting stupid now! They just look for any excuse to do nothing." A third simply called the rule "so petty."
Why black bags are a problem
Black bin bags cannot be recycled. According to London Recycles, if recycling is placed in a black bag and collected, the entire bag—including the recyclables—is thrown into the rubbish. Even if the bag is left open, the recycling inside won't be recycled. Additionally, bin bags can tangle in recycling lorry hoists, causing tears and litter. Recycling bins do not need liners because the contents should be dry and free of food waste, so pests are not an issue.
Other reasons binmen may refuse collection
- Overfilled bins: If the lid is not shut or the bin lid is broken, collection may be refused.
- Contaminated recycling: Non-recyclable items like food or soft plastics can lead to refusal, often with a sticker left explaining the issue.
- Excessive weight: Bins that are too heavy may not be collected.
- Side waste: Bags left next to the bin are typically ignored.
Recycling rules can vary by location. For specific guidance, check your council's website.
