Millions of passengers travel with British Airways (BA) annually, but unexpected cancellations can disrupt plans. According to airline officials, affected passengers have several options to reach their destination, including potential free accommodation depending on circumstances.
Options When Your BA Flight Is Cancelled
BA has confirmed that if your flight is cancelled, you can:
- Rebook to the next available British Airways flight free of charge via Manage My Booking.
- Contact BA to discuss booking onto another airline or alternative transport if a suitable BA alternative isn't available within 24 hours.
- Request a refund.
BA adds: "If the next available flight does not leave until the following day, we'll also offer you overnight accommodation at a hotel."
EU Consumer Rights and US Regulations
BA urges passengers to check their EU consumer rights, which may provide additional protections. For flights covered by United States Department of Transportation regulations, passengers may be eligible for a cash refund. If you booked through a travel agent or tour operator, contact them directly; BA can assist if you need extra support obtaining a refund from them.
Claiming Expenses for Cancelled or Delayed Flights
If your flight is delayed or cancelled and you incur additional expenses, BA may reimburse reasonable costs for:
- Hotel accommodation (where necessary).
- Transport between hotel and airport (where necessary).
- Alternative transport (flight, train, bus) under comparable conditions, if BA cannot offer a suitable alternative.
- Reasonable food and drink (excluding alcohol).
- Two telephone calls or internet-related costs to contact people outside the airport.
BA will not cover consequential losses, such as missed hotel stays or car rentals.
How to Submit an Expenses Claim
The quickest way to claim is online. You will need:
- Names of all passengers you are claiming for.
- Details of all delayed or cancelled flights in your journey.
- Details of your expenses.
- Receipts and other supporting documents (scans or photographs can be attached).
- Your bank account details for payment.
