Nick Woltemade's future with Newcastle United is in serious doubt after a difficult first season at St James' Park and a nightmare World Cup campaign with Germany. The 24-year-old striker, signed from VfB Stuttgart for £69 million last summer, failed to live up to expectations and now faces an uncertain summer transfer window.
Promising Start Fades
Woltemade began his Newcastle career strongly, scoring four goals in his first five Premier League appearances. However, his form quickly declined, and manager Eddie Howe was forced to deploy him as a makeshift midfielder for much of the season. He finished the 2025/26 campaign with eight top-flight goals, a return that fell short of the club's expectations given his hefty price tag.
World Cup Heartbreak
Despite his club struggles, Woltemade was included in Julian Nagelsmann's Germany squad for the World Cup in North America. He did not feature in any of Germany's Group E matches against Curacao, the Ivory Coast, or Ecuador. His only appearance came as a late substitute in the round of 32 against Paraguay, entering the match in the 117th minute with the score tied at 1-1.
With extra time failing to produce a winner, the match went to a penalty shootout. Germany trailed 3-2 when Woltemade stepped up to take his spot-kick, but his low effort was saved by Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill. Paraguay went on to win the shootout 4-3, eliminating Germany from the tournament.
Uncertain Future at Newcastle
Woltemade's premature return to Tyneside has intensified speculation about his future. Speaking on talkSPORT, former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan commented: "It's very difficult to be a No.9 at Newcastle. Joelinton was turned from a centre-forward into a midfield player and they got lucky. They're trying to do this with Woltemade. It's difficult for the kid because he isn't the player that they bought, for the position they bought him for. Now he looks lost. He looks like a player that comes on and plays midfield, which is clearly not his position."
Transfer Interest
Several clubs have been linked with a move for the 6ft 6ins striker, including Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, and Aston Villa. It remains unclear whether Newcastle will seek a permanent transfer or a loan deal, or whether they will give Woltemade another season to prove himself.
