A striking beachside home, wrapped in corrugated steel and created by a creative couple, has been listed for sale in East Sussex with an asking price of £750,000.
From Bungalow to 'Duneland'
Designers John Carver, 68, and Anna Carloss, 59, purchased the two-bedroom bungalow in Camber Sands three years ago. The pair, who have been married for 28 years, embarked on an extensive 18-month renovation, stripping the property back to its side walls before completely rebuilding it.
In total, they invested over £600,000 in acquiring and transforming the house, now named 'Duneland'. The result is a brand-new home where everything from the plumbing and electrics to the design is fresh, described by Mr Carver as not a "knackered old building that someone's tarted up."
A Private Coastal Sanctuary
The property boasts breathtaking views across the Channel from its prime position at the end of a quiet cul-de-sac, overlooking the dunes. Its design ensures total privacy, with the rising dune covered in spiky plants shielding it from view.
Key features of the home include:
- A large open-plan kitchen, living, and dining area bathed in light from remote-controlled Velux roof lights.
- An air-source heat pump for heating and full air-conditioning.
- A kitchen equipped with a double oven, induction hob, and boiling water tap.
- Interior walls clad in reclaimed and recycled timber panelling.
Outside, amenities include a six-person hot tub, an outdoor shower, a wood-fired oven, and a fire pit. A separate black rubber-clad studio in the garden offers extra workspace for creatives or digital nomads.
A Change of Plans Leads to Sale
The couple initially planned to use the property as a holiday let. However, a French art dealer acquaintance asked to rent it full-time and lived there for a year and a half before relocating to New York. This prompted the decision to sell.
Mr Carver, currently studying for a Masters in Fine Art at Goldsmiths University, highlighted the unique location: "It's the only dead-end road in Camber which overlooks the dunes." The estate agent who sold it to them had only been down the road twice in over 30 years of working locally.
The couple, who left London's Primrose Hill for East Sussex in 2007, are known for their property projects. Their previous renovation of a modernist bungalow near Paul McCartney's house was featured on the TV show 'I own Britain's Best Home'.
For commuters, London is accessible in just over an hour from nearby Rye railway station. Ms Carloss summed up the home's appeal: "It's quite dramatic and very quiet. You can hear the sea... It's a rather magical home."
