Tim Dowling finds himself in an awkward predicament when his wife is absent during a scheduled visit from builder Mark. Left to his own devices, Tim must personally guide Mark through a series of home repairs that he has either neglected or disastrously attempted himself. This private tour, he anticipates, will be a humiliating experience, exposing his lack of handyman skills. It has been two years since his last such ordeal, so the list of issues is extensive.
The Garden Wall Debacle
On a chilly morning, Mark arrives, clad in his signature shorts despite the cold. The tour begins in the back garden, where Tim points out a section of ivy he tried to trim and trellis sections he intended to install. Instead, he inadvertently pulled down half the garden wall. Mark reassures him that it is just a bit of brickwork, no problem. Tim nervously remarks that the wall only has to hold itself up, a comment he immediately regrets as Mark remains silent, allowing the stupidity of the statement to sink in.
The Pergola Predicament
Next, Tim gestures upward to a dilapidated structure, avoiding the word pergola, which he dislikes saying aloud. He explains that it was bolted to a board already attached to the wall, though not by him. Mark notes that the first board is rotten and has come away, leaving the entire thing propped up by a fence post of roughly the right size, which Tim admits was his doing. Mark calmly states it is a two-man job but will only take a couple of hours, offering a glimmer of hope.
Indoor Inspections and Ceiling Concerns
After addressing a few other outdoor issues, they move inside and upstairs to the attic bedroom. Here, Tim shows Mark a cracked and drooping ceiling beneath a recently repaired roof. Tim expresses deep worry about what lies behind the plaster, citing a phase of watching YouTube videos about bad roofs. He fears poorly installed insulation, no vapour barrier, and mould formation, suggesting the whole ceiling might need to come down. Mark proposes cutting a hole later in the week to investigate, a suggestion Tim accepts with the enthusiasm of someone scheduling a root canal.
When his wife returns that afternoon, she inquires about Mark's visit. Tim reports that Mark said it was no problem, but he always says that, hinting at underlying skepticism.
The Ceiling Revelation
On the day Mark returns with his cordless electric saw, Tim's wife is again out. Tim watches as Mark slices a square hole into the plaster, revealing insulation. Another cut shows no joist initially, but Mark explains they are behind the insulation, which is fixed to them. Tim assumes this is bad news, but Mark corrects him, stating it is good because it means there is a double layer of insulation. New boards can be screwed in and skimmed over, making it a two-day job at most.
Unexpected Good News and a Stuck Door
At this moment, Tim's wife arrives and proves more adept at handling good news, declaring it marvellous and asking when work can start. Mark schedules it for the end of the next week, mentioning he will bring timber for the pergola. His wife then brings up a stuck garden door, a problem Tim had been too embarrassed to mention, thinking it was swollen from rain or a faulty latch. She reveals they have been dragging wheelie bins through the house for a month. Mark offers to look at it immediately, and Tim follows him back to the garden, secretly hoping for a challenge not easily solved.
