Sydney Airport £3bn expansion to boost capacity to 72m

Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport, Australia's busiest flight hub, is set for a major 20-year expansion after the approval of its Master Plan 2045 proposals. The plan aims to boost annual passenger capacity from 42.5 million to more than 72 million by 2045.

Investment and Economic Impact

The airport's website states the Master Plan will support around $70 billion (approximately £36.8 billion) in annual economic activity and increase direct employment to more than 105,000 jobs. An initial five-year $6 billion AUD (£3.1 billion) capital works programme will fund upgrades across terminals T1, T2, and T3 to improve passenger experience and operational efficiency.

Terminal and Airfield Upgrades

The project includes linking domestic terminals 2 and 3 for a seamless passenger experience, along with major upgrades to the airfield. The Master Plan provides a "framework for future investment in terminals, transport connections and passenger facilities, while supporting more sustainable airport operations," according to the airport's website.

Government Endorsement

Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King commented: "Kingsford Smith is Australia’s busiest airport, it must remain fit for the future. Airports aren’t artworks; they’re constantly evolving to become more efficient and improve the passenger experience, and this new Master Plan maps out the airport’s plan to do just that. As demand grows, a modern Kingsford Smith will remain crucial to transport, tourism and industry across NSW and the nation."
