Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson is reportedly on the verge of a permanent exit from the Stadium of Light, with ambitious Championship side Wrexham leading the chase. The 26-year-old academy graduate, who helped the Black Cats secure promotion to the Premier League, has fallen behind Robin Roefs in the goalkeeping hierarchy and is expected to leave this summer.
Wrexham Lead Interest in Patterson
According to journalist Alan Nixon, Wrexham are attempting to sign Patterson as they prepare for another push towards the Premier League. The club is considering both permanent and loan arrangements for the shot-stopper, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Millwall. Sunderland is reportedly holding out for a fee of around £7m for the player, who has returned to the Academy of Light for pre-season training while his future is resolved.
Wrexham may be prepared to pay a transfer fee but would reportedly prefer either a straightforward loan or an initial loan containing an option or obligation to buy. The club's ambition to reach the top flight has driven their interest in Patterson, who has proven his ability in the Championship.
Millwall and Rangers Also Keen
Millwall are also keen to bring Patterson back to The Den following his successful loan spell during the second half of last season. The Lions recruited him in February after he had been restricted to just one senior appearance for Sunderland during the opening months of the campaign. However, Sunderland's asking price has reportedly discouraged Rangers from progressing their interest. Wolverhampton Wanderers are another club to have considered Patterson but would reportedly need to move one of their existing goalkeepers on before making an approach.
Patterson's Sunderland Career
Patterson's Sunderland story has included two successful promotion campaigns. His career took off after initially spending time on the senior bench during the 2018/19 season. Three years later, he was central to a successful play-off final for a second time. Patterson produced two important saves against Sheffield United at Wembley, including a crucial second-half stop while Sunderland trailed, before Regis Le Bris' side recovered to win 2–1 and secure promotion to the Premier League.
Despite his heroics, Patterson has since played second fiddle to Roefs, prompting his expected departure. The 26-year-old is now training with Sunderland's senior goalkeepers while his future is resolved, with a move away from the Stadium of Light appearing imminent.
