Plans for a new 171-space multi-storey car park in Stalybridge have been approved, marking a key step in the town's wider regeneration. The facility will be built on the existing council car park on Waterloo Road, standing almost 13 metres high with a lift and two pedestrian access points linking to King Street.
Details of the Development
The car park will include 151 standard spaces, 13 accessible spaces for people with disabilities, four electric vehicle charging points, and motorcycle parking. A vehicle drop-off area will be retained near the Waterloo Road entrance for visitors to Stalybridge Clinic. The project is part of Tameside Council's broader plans for Stalybridge, including the proposed Stalybridge West scheme, which will deliver new homes on the Castle Street car park site.
Funding and Impact
Backed by £20 million of government funding, the regeneration programme aims to boost the local economy, improve access, and create better places to live, work, and visit. The new car park will ensure the town centre does not lose existing parking provision as brownfield sites are redeveloped. Councillor McLaren, Tameside Council's deputy leader and executive member for growth, housing and homelessness, said: “This is an important step forward for Stalybridge. The new multi-storey car park will support our wider plans to improve the town, making it easier for people to visit and spend time here while helping local businesses to grow.”
Next Steps
Now that planning approval has been granted, work will begin on the next stage of detailed design and delivery. Construction is expected to start in early 2027 once these plans are complete. The car park is one of several projects led by Tameside Council to improve Stalybridge, with the aim of boosting visitor numbers and supporting local shops, cafes, and businesses.
