Residents and parish councils are fiercely opposing plans to build 100 homes on more than 12 acres of land in Twigworth, near Gloucester, citing severe concerns about sewage flooding and the area's infrastructure.
AandK Gateshead Limited has submitted proposals to develop the land off the A38 Tewkesbury Road. The developer's consultants claim the scheme is sustainable and would provide up to 100 high-quality new dwellings.
Flooding and Sewage Concerns
Twigworth Parish Council's objection letter highlights that the sewerage system frequently bursts through manholes, flooding public spaces. They warn that additional homes would overload the pumping station at Wallsworth Lane, which already floods nearby properties and businesses with sewage during heavy rain.
Down Hatherley Parish Council also objects, stating the foul drainage network is operating beyond safe capacity with a history of failure. They argue no evidence shows the development can proceed without increasing flood risk and environmental pollution.
Developer's Response
The developer maintains the proposal addresses local housing needs and includes sustainable drainage systems like basins and swales. They note most of the site is in Flood Zone 1, the lowest flood risk, and have a proactive flood risk strategy.
Tewkesbury Borough Council planners are expected to decide on the application by October 6, 2026.
