Screwfix plans pod in Morrisons Whitley Bay car park
Screwfix pod plan for Morrisons Whitley Bay car park

Screwfix has submitted a planning application to North Tyneside Council for a new outlet in Whitley Bay, to be located in the Morrisons supermarket car park on Hillheads Road.

Pod details and jobs

The proposed 'commercial pod' would cover more than 87 square metres and provide customers with convenient access to hardware items, available for collection in advance, delivery, or on-site purchase. The application outlines opening hours from 7am to 8pm Monday to Friday, 7am to 6pm on Saturday, and 9am to 4pm on Sunday.

It is expected the pod will create two full-time and five part-time roles. The development would occupy approximately 14 of the 382 existing parking spaces at Morrisons.

Application rationale

The application states the pod is of a modest scale and designed to respond appropriately to its surroundings, with no unacceptable impacts on visual amenity, residential amenity, highway safety, parking provision, ecology, flood risk, drainage, land stability, or contamination. It also highlights the provision of more commercial services and the effective use of existing business land in a sustainable location.

At the time of publication, no decision has been made by councillors or planning officers. Similar proposals at the same site, including a WeBuyAnyCar pod and additional retail units, were granted permission in 2017.
