Royton Library in Oldham has temporarily closed less than two years after £4m was spent refurbishing it. No timeline has been given for when the building will reopen.
From today (August 24), the library will be closed while work is carried out to repair flooring within the building and further investigations take place. Oldham Council said a reopening date would be announced as soon as more information becomes available.
Council apologises for inconvenience
Subnum Hariff-Khan, Head of Heritage, Libraries and Arts for Oldham Council, said: “We understand that Royton Library is a valued community resource and a place that many residents rely on, so we appreciate that this temporary closure may cause some inconvenience. We’re exploring alternative local options to support residents and will update as soon as possible.
“These works are essential to ensure the building remains safe, welcoming and fit for the future. Throughout the closure, customers will still be able to access library services at our other libraries across the borough, as well as a wide range of digital resources online.
“We would like to thank residents for their patience and understanding while this work takes place.
“We look forward to welcoming everyone back to Royton Library once the improvements have been completed.”
Refurbishment completed in September 2024
Royton Town Hall and the library underwent a £4.1m refurbishment that finished in September 2024. Plans to restore the building were first announced in 2017, but work did not begin until 2023.
Previous council reports cited “significant inflationary pressures” and “cost increases”, with the budget rising from an original £2.4m. Seddon Property Services, the contractor for the project, also noted on its website “challenges posed by the town centre’s limited space and surrounding buildings”.
When the building reopened in September 2024, Oldham Council said: “The restoration of Royton Town Hall included repairs to the clock tower’s copper roof and clock face, and the demolition of 1970s rear extensions that didn’t fit the original design.
“These were replaced with a new rear wall that complements the historic architecture and the new community garden. Inside, the interior has been stripped back to preserve as much of the original décor and features as possible.
“The town hall meeting room has also been refurbished and will be available for community hire.
“The adjacent library has undergone a complete re-fit and is now fully accessible, with new lifts and improved facilities for people with disabilities, including a Changing Places toilet with adult-sized changing benches, hoists, and space for carers.”
Community asset praised by council leader
Then-council leader Coun Arooj Shah said: “Heritage buildings like Royton Town Hall and Library are what make Oldham special. That’s why Oldham Council is investing in protecting them for future generations.
“The town hall has been transformed and it looks absolutely amazing. It’s a place that is rooted in the community and a place Royton can be proud of for years to come.
“I look forward to welcoming residents back inside, whether it’s for a special occasion, to simply enjoy reading a book, or to have a quiet moment in the garden. This is your building, and I hope you love it.”
