Plans for over 130 new properties on the site of the former Tyne Brand factory complex in North Shields Fish Quay will be decided next week.

North Tyneside Council’s planning committee will reach a decision on Kickpoint Ltd’s application for the construction of 138 new residential properties at Tanners Bank next Wednesday. The plans call for six townhouses, 20 duplexes, and 112 flats, with a mix of one, two, and three-bedroom units.
The potential development also calls for commercial units on the ground floor level, which may accommodate shops, cafes, medical facilities, or a nursery, among other options. Undercroft parking has also been proposed, with 150 spaces.
Council recommendation
The council’s own report states: “The development would facilitate the comprehensive regeneration of a long derelict and highly prominent site within the Fish Quay Conservation Area. The redevelopment would replace a vacant and visually harmful site with a high-quality mixed-use scheme comprising new homes, commercial floorspace, public realm improvements and landscaping. Significant weight is afforded to these regeneration benefits.”
Council officers have recommended that the plans be granted permission next week.
Public response and decision
The council has logged 17 objections to the plans, ranging from worries that the development is overly dense or oversized to concerns over traffic pressures. Five supportive comments were also received, hailing the scheme as a “great opportunity for the area” and saying it would improve a currently derelict site.
Councillors will gather at North Tyneside Council’s Cobalt Business Park HQ at 6pm on August 19 to reach a decision on the future of the project.
