Luis, a 68-year-old pensioner, left Spain to retire in Thailand, where he built a house for €20,000 (£16,700) and now enjoys a slower, cheaper life in 30C November heat.
Move to Isan
Luis moved to the Isan region in the north-east of Thailand, far from tourist spots like Bangkok, Phuket, and Ko Samui. He told YouTuber Sergio Castillo Calderon: "With 20,000 euros (£16,700), you can build yourself a house and live a peaceful life."
He built the house on land owned by his wife, a Thai national. Foreigners face restrictions on land ownership in Thailand, so understanding local laws is important before moving.
Daily life and costs
Luis's day often starts at 3.30am or 4am with coffee on the porch, followed by walking his dogs. He says he no longer feels the urgency he had in Europe. His electricity bill is around €60 (£50) a month, far lower than in Britain or western Europe.
He values the community atmosphere and the less fast-paced life. He said: "You realise that many things weren't as important as you once thought. I don't even have a TV. It's more relaxing this way." He added: "Here, no one honks their horn, no one shoves you. If something doesn’t go as planned, it’s no big deal."
Challenges and climate
Luis has faced difficulties getting private medical insurance due to his health history. Thailand's average high temperatures range from 29C in December to 37C in April, with a rainy season from May to October, peaking in September and October.
