Hawkhead Bowling Club in Paisley has taken a major step forward in its plan to sell off unused land for housing, after Renfrewshire Council granted planning permission in principle for a residential development on its south green. The club, established in 1921 and located on Gartmore Road, submitted the application in October to facilitate the sale of the plot adjacent to Newtyle Road, citing financial challenges.

Financial struggles force difficult decision

In a statement, the club explained that it was running at an annual loss, with rapidly diminishing funds and major repairs looming. "Without additional funds to meet these costs, the future of the club is at very significant risk," the statement read. The club noted that while it actively seeks new members, recruitment cannot cover the required repairs. The sale of the south green is seen as a way to preserve the club for years to come.

Application details and community response

The application, lodged by Framed Estates on behalf of the club, was described as a "direct response" to the need for funds. A planning statement highlighted that the costs of maintaining two bowling greens had become unsustainable, particularly the vacant south green, which had fallen into disuse due to declining membership. The revenue from the sale would be ring-fenced for critical works, including clubhouse refurbishment and upgrades to the remaining green.

Over 40 representations were submitted, with 24 in favour and 17 against. The council's report noted that while the historic use of the full club as a sports facility was acknowledged, membership data from Bowls Scotland indicated the proposal would not result in the loss of valuable recreation provision. Instead, it would help secure the club's long-term future.

Next steps

The council confirmed the proposal aligns with the development plan. However, as this is planning permission in principle, final details such as the number of units, design, drainage, and landscaping will be addressed in a subsequent approval of matters application.
