The Magpie, a popular matchday pub in Newcastle city centre, has closed down and is now up for let, with to let signs spotted on Monday, July 8, 2026. The pub, located on Percy Street, shut earlier this summer just 18 months after opening in December 2024.
History of the Venue
For years, the building at 41-49 Eldon Garden was home to The Goose, a budget-friendly boozer popular with drinkers of all ages. Its closure in autumn 2024 surprised many, but new owners quickly took over and transformed it into a 'pure Geordie' venue named The Magpie.
The Magpie featured local lingo and quotes from Geordie football legends like Kevin Keegan adorning its walls. Its close proximity to St James' Park made it a prime spot for NUFC fans on match days. With drink deals throughout the week, it also attracted a wider crowd.
Closure and Future
ChronicleLive reported in early June 2026 that The Magpie had closed. Sources at the time indicated plans to reopen as a new venue, but that no longer appears to be the case. The last Facebook post was in April, advertising a screening of the Fury vs Makhmudov fight.
Now, to let signs have gone up for the 10,500sqft space, with contacts for enquiries. The pub's prominent location in the heart of Newcastle is expected to attract interest from potential operators.
