Beat Winter Condensation with a £2.18 Cat Litter Hack
Mrs Hinch Fans' £2.18 Condensation Solution

As winter tightens its grip, many households across the UK are waking up to a familiar and frustrating sight: windows streaming with condensation. This persistent moisture can lead to mould and damp issues, creating an unhealthy living environment.

The Social Media Solution

The problem became so pressing for one parent that they turned to the popular 'Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips' Facebook group for advice. They explained their particular dilemma, stating they couldn't leave their two-year-old's bedroom window open due to the child's recurring illness, despite using dehumidifiers and damp pots.

The response from the community was overwhelming, with one simple, cost-effective suggestion rising to the top. Eilise Black recommended: "Cat litter in pots or tied into socks or stockings on the windowsill will help with the condensation."

How the Hack Works

Fellow group member Jennifer Smith confirmed the method's effectiveness, adding that while it "doesn't look good", it "absorbs quite a bit of moisture." The process involves filling a long sock with inexpensive cat litter and placing it on the affected windowsill.

The beauty of this solution lies in its accessibility and affordability. Shoppers can find suitable cat litter at major UK supermarkets, with prices starting from just £2.18 at Asda, £2.19 at Sainsbury's, and £4.39 at Pets at Home.

Alternative Condensation Fighters

While the cat litter method gained significant traction, group members suggested other approaches for tackling window moisture. Joey Mclennan advocated for a method seen from cleaning expert Nancy Birtwhistle, involving washing-up liquid. "Dry cloth and a spot of washing up liquid wiped all over the windows and hey presto no condensation the next morning," they reported after testing it successfully.

Another user, Gill Heron, recommended using a Karcher window vacuum to physically remove the condensation, followed by ventilating the room for about ten minutes.

These practical solutions offer hope to homeowners battling winter condensation, proving that effective fixes don't always require expensive equipment or professional intervention.
