Misty Windows Warning: Check Seal Before Paying for Repairs

Homeowners across the UK are being urged to check their windows this week for a common yet annoying feature: misty panes. A misty window does not necessarily mean you need to pay for an entirely new one.

Window specialists say moisture inside double- or triple-glazed units can indicate a damaged seal. That could mean the glazing is no longer insulating your home effectively, making it harder to keep rooms warm and potentially increasing heating costs.

Check Where the Moisture Is

The important distinction is whether the condensation is on the surface of the glass or trapped between the panes. Surface condensation forms when warm, moist air meets cold glass. It is particularly common during winter, and leaving moisture unattended can contribute to damp and mould problems.

Try wiping the accessible indoor surface with a dry cloth. If the mist remains, check whether it appears to sit within the glazing rather than on its surface. Moisture between the panes cannot be wiped away from inside the room.

Why Trapped Condensation Matters

Experts at National Plastics say a failed or damaged seal is one of the main causes of condensation inside a glazed unit. Moisture can enter the gap between the panes and condense when it meets colder glass.

The warning is not just about appearance. Internal condensation can be a sign that the window's insulating performance has dropped, so turning up the heating may not address the underlying problem.

Check Your Guarantee Before Paying

If you suspect moisture is trapped inside the glazing, arrange a professional assessment to see what has failed and which repair is appropriate. Grabex says the permanent fix for condensation build-up is to replace the glass unit — not necessarily the frame or the whole window system.

The experts said: "In many cases, this is a fault which is covered by manufacturers' guarantees, usually up to 10 years. New units are gas-filled and warm-edge sealed to restore full insulation."

Installation is quick, clean, and far cheaper than replacing the entire window system. Check your installation paperwork and contact the supplier to find out whether your particular fault is covered before agreeing to paid work.

Do Not Mistake a Quick Fix for a Lasting Repair

Seal replacement and re-gassing are among the options mentioned by specialists, but a professional should check whether they are suitable for your window. Online suggestions such as heating the glass with a hairdryer or drilling small holes are not lasting solutions to internal condensation. Rather than attempting those methods, have the affected unit inspected and ask whether replacing the glass alone will resolve the problem.
