Enzo Maresca is pushing Manchester City to sign his former Chelsea player Malo Gusto, according to reports. The Italian manager, set to be confirmed as City's new boss after agreeing compensation with Chelsea, wants to bring in several signings this summer to avoid the struggles faced by other Premier League clubs replacing legends.
Maresca's Transfer Plans
Maresca, who left Chelsea in January, agreed to take over from Pep Guardiola at the end of last season. He is targeting a number of his own players, having been linked with Chelsea stars Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez. However, Chelsea view Palmer as 'untouchable', and Real Madrid lead the race for wantaway midfielder Fernandez.
Gusto as a Key Target
According to talkSPORT, Maresca hopes to sign French right-back Gusto. City were in the race for Inter Milan's Marco Malestra but turned to other targets after Chelsea agreed a £51m deal for the defender. Gusto is now a primary option, with Chelsea reportedly wanting at least £40m to sell.
Gusto arrived at Stamford Bridge from Lyon in 2023 for £31m and has been a mainstay, making 134 appearances over three seasons. The 23-year-old is currently at the World Cup with France, coming on as a substitute in Monday's 3-0 win over Iraq. Reports earlier this week indicated Chelsea were not ruling out a summer sale for the defender.
Impact and Next Steps
Maresca's push for Gusto highlights his intent to reshape City's squad. With Chelsea open to selling, a deal could advance after the World Cup. City will need to meet Chelsea's valuation to secure the right-back.
