Manchester United are reportedly planning a significant reshaping of their defence in the summer of 2027, as several key players enter the final year of their contracts. Manager Michael Carrick is focusing on midfield reinforcements for the current window, but defensive changes are earmarked for the future.
Defensive Contract Situation
Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, and Lisandro Martinez all entered the final year of their contracts on July 1, 2026. United hold the option to trigger 12-month extensions for Maguire and Martinez, but Shaw's situation is more pressing. The left-back turns 31 at the end of next week, and a decision on his future is expected before the turn of the year, according to reports.
Matthijs De Ligt, under contract until 2029, has been sidelined since late November due to a back injury requiring surgery, adding further uncertainty to the defensive line.
Midfield Priority for 2026
United's immediate focus is on strengthening midfield following the departure of Casemiro and a lengthy injury to Manuel Ugarte. The club is close to signing Brazilian midfielder Ederson from Atalanta for an initial £35 million, plus £3.8 million in add-ons, after agreeing a deal between both clubs.
However, the Reds missed out on two key midfield targets this summer. Mateus Fernandes joined Tottenham Hotspur for £85 million, with United opting not to rival Spurs due to financial constraints and uncertainty over the player's preference. Earlier, England star Elliot Anderson moved to Manchester City from Nottingham Forest for £116 million.
Further Reinforcements Needed
Despite the imminent arrival of Ederson, more midfield additions are required before United begin their Premier League campaign away at newly-promoted Hull City on August 22. The club is also looking to strengthen at left-back, but the Daily Mail claims that major defensive changes are unlikely until 2027.
Departures and Squad Changes
Several players have already left Old Trafford this summer as contracts expired: Jadon Sancho, Casemiro, Tyrell Malacia, Sonny Aljofree, Malachi Sharpe, and James Bailey have all ended their association with United.
Carrick's squad is undergoing a transition, with the manager aiming to build a team capable of competing at the highest level. The 2027 window is seen as a crucial opportunity to overhaul the defence and shape the club's long-term future.
