Man United buys key land for new Old Trafford stadium

Manchester United took a significant step toward building a new 100,000-seater stadium on Monday after agreeing to purchase critical land. The club now owns most of the land needed for the project.

Land Deal Details

The land, previously owned by Indurent, is located 350 meters from Old Trafford and spans a 25-acre triangle. This acquisition means United controls the majority of the required site. Talks had been ongoing for the Freightliner rail yard near Old Trafford, but those stalled after reports valued the land at £350 million. United then pursued the Indurent plot as an alternative.

Some land is still needed to begin construction, but the club is confident there will be no issues.

Stadium Timeline Revised

Design work on the new stadium had been paused during land negotiations but will now resume, with Foster + Partners overseeing the design. An initial opening date of 2030 was set, but in March the club acknowledged that timeline is unrealistic. United expects the stadium to be completed five years after construction begins, with a more realistic opening before 2035. The club plans to bid as a host venue for the 2035 FIFA Women's World Cup.

Club Statement

Collette Roche, chief executive of new stadium development, said: “Today’s news highlights the progress we’re making towards a world-class new home for Manchester United and represents a significant milestone as we move into the next phase of development.”
