Green Welly Stop in Tyndrum Put Up for Sale After 61 Years

One of Scotland's most recognised roadside destinations, The Green Welly Stop in Tyndrum, Stirlingshire, has been put on the market after more than six decades as a family-run business. Established in 1965 by Les and Betty Gosden, the site has been managed by three generations of families, including the Wilkie and Robertson families, over 61 years.

Business Growth and Facilities

Through steady growth and careful investment, the business now includes two cafes, retail shops, a fuel station, whisky off-sales, facilities for travellers, and extensive staff accommodation. Listed by Christie & Co, the asking price is noted as "price on application". The current owners hope potential buyers will build on the heritage nurtured by the families over the years.

Millions of visitors from Scotland and beyond have paused at the stop over the past six decades, including travellers, walkers, cyclists, and motorcyclists, making it a must-see destination for many.

Ownership and Management

Founding partner Lesley Wilkie continues to play an active role in the business, while Edward and Fiona Robertson are the remaining managing partners. Mark Lavery, director of retail and leisure at Christie & Co, said: "The sale of the Green Welly Stop represents a unique opportunity to purchase an iconic, turnkey business, fully managed by experienced and dedicated staff, and benefiting from a strategic unopposed location, along with seven decades of trading history and diversified income streams."

He added: "This national institution offers a purchaser the opportunity to operate an extremely successful and profitable fuel and retail destination, with scope for margin optimisation and further development."

Emotional Decision for Owners

Managers Edward and Fiona Robertson shared that it was a difficult decision to let go of the Tyndrum destination, but they agree it is time for the business to run through fresh eyes. They said: "Deciding to place our family business on the market after 61 adventure-filled years has been one of the hardest decisions we’ve ever had to make. While this is an emotional moment for us, we know the time is right to begin the next chapter of our lives."

They added: "The Green Welly Stop has never just been about the buildings - it's always been about the people. We simply could not have achieved everything we have without our incredible team, and we are deeply grateful to every member of staff, past and present, whose dedication, hard work and loyalty have helped make this business what it is today."

They further stated: "We are equally thankful to our outstanding management team, whose professionalism and commitment ensure the business continues to thrive every day. To everyone who has stopped for a meal, a coffee, fuel, a warm welcome or simply a friendly chat over the years, thank you for being part of our story. We leave with immense pride, wonderful memories and heartfelt gratitude to our loyal customers, our staff and the local community who have supported us throughout this remarkable journey."

The Green Welly Stop will continue trading as usual while ownership is changing. More information about the property can be found on the Christie & Co website.
