Plans to transform a former police station and school in Felling into 14 new flats are set for a decision by Gateshead councillors next week.

Gateshead Council's planning and development committee will meet on August 12 to consider an application to convert the former Felling police station and, more recently, Chedar School. If approved, the red brick two-storey building on Sunderland Road would be converted into eight one-bedroom and six two-bedroom flats across the ground, first, and second floors.
Officer recommendation
While the size of the flats does not meet storage-space standards, council officers have said this “limited shortfall” is outweighed by the benefits of bringing the empty building back into use. Officers also highlighted the economic benefits from the construction sector and the future council tax base.
The development's size means the council's affordable housing policy does not apply. However, the applicant, Mr George Leonidas, has indicated the flats would be “intended” for affordable rental.
No objections
Planning officials have advised councillors to grant the application. They conclude: “Officers conclude that the proposal represents sustainable development, with the identified benefits significantly outweighing the limited harm identified.”
The report also states: “The deficiencies are confined solely to storage provision and result from the constraints associated with the sensitive conversion of an existing heritage asset.” No letters of objection have been received, and Northumbria Police have raised no issues with the design.
