France is easiest country for British retirees, expert says

France is the easiest country for Britons to retire to, according to an expert, with overall costs 20% lower than in the UK. Chris Nye, a senior editor at Your Overseas Home, said France is likely the most straightforward option for those looking to spend their retirement abroad.

Why France?

France is home to around 172,000 UK nationals, making it a popular destination for British retirees. Only Spain has more Britons living in Europe. The analysis from Overseas Home, which helps people buy properties abroad, shows that France is 20% cheaper than the UK overall.

Mr Nye, who has over two decades of experience in European property markets, said people moving across the Channel can expect “country homes” rather than an apartment block with a pool. He told Sky News: "Cost-wise, most British people choose Nouvelle-Aquitaine, in the South West. You can definitely buy a nice cottage for up to €100,000 (£87,000). You can get some land quite easily."

Where to avoid

The expert warned against Normandy or Brittany in north-west France, saying Brits will be “fighting with Parisians” for homes there.

Cost breakdown

According to Overseas Home, a supermarket shop in France is 24% cheaper than in the UK, and home-running costs are 9% cheaper. Eating out is 35% less, while transport is 3% more expensive.

Despite these lower prices, France ranks last for affordability out of four countries assessed by Sky News: Portugal, Spain, Italy, and France. These are the four most popular places to retire in Europe.

Visa requirements

To retire in France, Brits must apply for a Long Stay Visa, which lasts up to a year, and prove they have an income of at least £14,900 a year per person, including pensions. They also need private medical insurance or a UK government-issued healthcare entitlement certificate (S1). After eight months, they must apply for a residency permit when the Long Stay Visa expires, which lasts a year and is renewed annually.
