For years, snapping up an affordable holiday home in sun-drenched European hotspots like Spain and Portugal was a realistic dream for many Brits. However, with the global cost of living squeeze and Spain's proposed 100% holiday home tax for UK buyers, that dream is under threat. Yet, a charming and verdant corner of France is bucking the trend, offering surprisingly low prices for those seeking a continental retreat.
A Budget-Friendly Find in the French Countryside
In an upcoming episode of Channel 4's A Place in the Sun, airing on Monday 8th January, presenter Craig Rowe explores the Haute-Vienne department within the Limousin region. He is helping best friends Fiona and Tina, who have a maximum budget of £80,000, find their ideal holiday home.
Craig Rowe admitted to The Sun that he was initially sceptical about finding quality within their price range. "I was amazed at the prices," he said. "At first... I said to my producer, 'I think we’re going to struggle to get something decent for that price'. But you’d be amazed at what we found which were really good properties." The search proved successful, with Fiona and Tina securing their dream property for £75,000 – a full £5,000 under their initial budget.
Limousin: The 'French Lake District'
Prospective buyers should not expect coastal views in Limousin. This inland region, situated between Lyon and Poitiers, is miles from the sea. Instead, it offers a different kind of allure, being one of the greenest areas in France. It is famed as the 'French Lake District', boasting thousands of lakes and nature reserves perfect for water sports and outdoor pursuits.
The area is rich in history and picturesque villages. Notable spots include Collonges-la-Rouge with its distinctive red sandstone houses, the hilltop village of Turenne, and Aubusson, world-renowned for its tapestry production. History buffs can explore the ruins of the once-powerful Château de Crozant, a site that inspired Impressionist painters like Monet.
"It’s a beautiful region filled with little patisseries and boulangeries," Craig Rowe added, highlighting its classic French charm. "It has lots of beautiful French towns, and of course, lots of lakes so you won’t miss being by the coast – and if you want to visit a city then Bordeaux isn’t far away."
A Bargain in a Rising Market
While the famous €1 villa schemes in Italy require significant renovation investment, Limousin presents a move-in-ready alternative at a still remarkably low price point. Rowe noted the presence of an expat community and emphasised the value for money. "With prices going up all over the world, it’s great to find these pockets where you can still get a really good bargain," he concluded.
For Brits facing soaring costs and new taxes in traditional holiday home destinations, the Limousin region of France emerges as a compelling and affordable alternative, offering culture, nature, and a slice of authentic French life without breaking the bank.
