Officials within the Trump administration's Treasury Department have reportedly advocated for a new $250 bill featuring Donald Trump's image to commemorate the nation's 250th anniversary. The Washington Post obtained mock-ups of the proposed bill, which displayed Trump's portrait and the phrase '250 AMERICA.' U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach allegedly pressed staff to advance the concept.
Legal Obstacle
Under federal law, only deceased individuals are permitted to appear on U.S. currency, a regulation that has been in effect since 1866. This poses a significant legal hurdle for the proposed bill, as Donald Trump is still alive.
Production Challenges
Current and former employees of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing indicated that creating a new bill, especially one of such high value, typically takes six to eight years to produce. Patricia Solimene, the director of the printing bureau, was reassigned from her role after reportedly explaining to officials that the $250 note was not statutorily authorized and would take years to produce.
The proposal has drawn criticism, with late-night host Jimmy Kimmel roasting Melania Trump for what he described as her latest money grab. The report highlights the tension between the administration's desire to honor the nation's anniversary and the legal and practical constraints of currency design.
