Fans of the long-running ITV soap Emmerdale now have a unique chance to own a piece of television history, as the programme's iconic post office building is set to go under the hammer later this month.
A Landmark Location with a Major Catch
The property, situated in the picturesque village of Esholt near Bradford, West Yorkshire, served as a key filming location for the soap for years, featuring in hundreds of memorable scenes. However, there's a significant condition for any prospective buyer. The successful bidder will not be able to move into the characterful building but must instead take on the role of landlord.
This is because the post office business itself was sold separately last month to local resident and Emmerdale enthusiast Helen Myers. The business continues to trade from the premises under a six-year lease that is up for renewal in 2031, generating a reported annual rental income of over £11,000.
Bidding Details and Television Heritage
The building will appear in an online auction held by Pugh, part of Eddisons, with a guide price of £200,000. The auction opens on 27 January and closes on 28 January.
Will Thompson, a director at Pugh, highlighted the unique appeal of the sale. "Esholt post office is not only an attractive and characterful building in a sought-after village, but it also has a special place in the hearts of Emmerdale viewers across the country," he said.
He added that the auction presents an "exciting opportunity for buyers looking for something genuinely unique," combining commercial potential with undeniable small-screen heritage.
From Esholt to Harewood: A Soap History
Emmerdale originally relocated its outdoor filming to Esholt from Arncliffe in Littondale. The village's time as the show's home concluded in 1998, when production moved to a purpose-built set on the Harewood estate, where it remains today.
The news of the property auction follows Emmerdale's recent headline-grabbing crossover event with fellow ITV soap Coronation Street, dubbed 'Corriedale'. The special episode featured a dramatic car pile-up that led to the death of characters from both shows, including Coronation Street's Billy Mayhew.
Despite the success of the crossover, ITV's soap boss Iain McLeod has ruled out any plans for a repeat, emphasising that both soaps will remain "distinct entities" with their own unique tone and storytelling style.
Emmerdale airs on ITV1 and is available to stream on ITVX.
