Daniel Johns lists vacant Merewether block for up to $3m

Former Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns is preparing to part with his vacant lot in Merewether, a prestigious beach suburb just three kilometres from Newcastle's central business district. The property has been listed with a price guide ranging from $2.7 million to $3 million.

Property history and subdivision

The 47-year-old musician demolished his original five-bedroom home on the site in 2025, a property he had purchased in 2000 for $1.4 million. After clearing the land, he subdivided it into two lots. One block was sold in August 2025 for $3.2 million after just 24 days on the market, as reported by the Newcastle Herald.

The remaining 968-square-metre parcel occupies a high position in a secluded cul-de-sac, offering stunning ocean views of Merewether Beach. According to the publication, a neighbouring four-bedroom home sold for $3.7 million in July 2025.

Reasons for sale

Johns has not publicly disclosed the reasons behind the sale on his social media channels. He previously stated that demolishing the old home was intended to 'unlock the site's full potential'. In a statement, he said: 'This place has been a huge part of my life and creativity, but it's time for something new that reflects where I'm at now and what's next.'

This latest sale follows the disposal of another nearby investment property in 2024, which fetched $2.75 million after being listed for $3 million. Johns had purchased that four-bedroom, two-bathroom home at the age of 17 for just $360,000 in May 1996.

Other investments and social media hiatus

Realestate.com reported on Tuesday that Johns also owns two other investment properties in Newcastle. Last year, the musician announced a hiatus from social media, marking his 46th birthday with a cryptic Instagram post that hinted at a need for solitude, possibly to focus on a new art project.

'As an artist, you never know what time it is. It's an ongoing quest to interpret happiness and sadness with a sprinkling of absurdity. It's drama. It's comedy. It's poetry. It's a song. It's cinema,' he wrote. 'Everything is beautiful if you let it be.' He concluded: 'I have to go back in time to finalise something and as a result I won't be on socials, my team will keep an eye on things. I will have my phone. All is love.'

Life out of the spotlight

The rock star has largely remained out of the public eye in recent years, following highly publicised legal and substance abuse issues. Johns and his former Silverchair bandmates rose to fame as teenagers, taking the world by storm with their debut album Frogstomp in 1995 before disbanding in 2011. The musicians have said they have 'drifted apart' from Johns since the split.
