Liverpool Council has approved a new vision for Stonebridge Cross in Croxteth, a 55-acre site that has seen numerous failed promises over the years. The plan now centers on a significant employment space and a reduced figure of around 220 homes, with a promise to provide local jobs and wider regeneration benefits.

The decision, signed off by the council's cabinet, gives officers delegated authority to appoint a specialist marketing agent and begin the process of securing a development partner. The site, owned by the council since 2014, has previously been considered for Everton's new stadium and a 1,200-home development in 2021.
Councillor Anthony Lavelle, who has represented Croxteth for 10 years, acknowledged the history of unfulfilled promises. He noted that previous plans included a super-warehouse, which he lobbied against due to residents' concerns, leading to the residential earmarking.
Community Cynicism and Hopes
Local resident John Critchley, who has lived in Croxteth for most of his 80 years, expressed skepticism, recalling promises made 15 years ago. He emphasized the need for infrastructure to accompany any housing development, worrying about pressure on roads and local services.
Cllr Lavelle understands the cynicism, admitting that residents might roll their eyes at yet another plan. He stressed the importance of turning the master plan into reality, saying, "So now we need to put our money where our mouth is and make sure that this is not just a master plan which gets put on a shelf in the council, but actually, you know, is turned into a reality."
