A consortium including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin is expected to be confirmed as a significant minority stakeholder in Liverpool Football Club within the coming week. The investment group is spearheaded by British billionaire Amit Bhatia.
Deal details
According to Sky News, the group is nearing completion of a deal for approximately one-third of the total shareholding. Fenway Sports Group (FSG), Liverpool's current majority owner, is preparing to announce the development, potentially as early as this week.
The move has gained momentum in recent weeks, following earlier reports indicating that discussions between the consortium and FSG were in their initial stages.
Valuation and background
The transaction is expected to value Liverpool at approximately £4.4 billion ($6 billion) overall, positioning it among the world's most valuable football clubs alongside Manchester United and Real Madrid.
The consortium originated with interest from Bhatia, who previously served as co-owner at Championship side Queens Park Rangers, where he was also supported by his father-in-law, Lakshmi Mittal, the Indian steel magnate. The businessmen withdrew from their positions at QPR last month to prevent a conflict of interest, accelerating discussions about acquiring a stake in Liverpool.
