Commercial property firm WMA Group has taken ownership of Loudoun Hall, Ayr's oldest surviving house, and plans to reopen it as a community venue.
Historic purchase
The Ayrshire firm announced the purchase on social media, calling it a “proud milestone.” They said: “Today marks a proud milestone for WMA Group as we announce the purchase of Loudoun Hall, Ayr’s oldest building and one of Scotland’s most historically significant secular buildings.”
They added: “For centuries, Loudoun Hall has played an important role in the story of our town. We are honoured to become its custodians and are committed to preserving this remarkable landmark while giving it a sustainable future for generations to come.”
Background
The hall, built in 1513 for merchant James Tait, was previously owned by trustees who decided to sell the A-listed property, as reported by Ayrshire Live in November last year.
Loudoun Hall once stood at the centre of Ayr’s commercial life and later became home to the Sheriff of Ayrshire, serving as a hub for governance and international trade. It was rescued in the 1940s, restored, and reopened as a cultural venue and civic space.
Future plans
South Ayrshire Council leased the hall for around half a century, with upgrades since the 1990s. Running costs were understood to top £30,000 per year, and the hall has been closed since the Covid pandemic in 2020.
WMA Group said: “Our vision is to breathe new life into the Hall by creating a vibrant community and events venue, offering flexible spaces for local groups, businesses, workshops, exhibitions, performances and private functions, while carefully respecting the building’s unique heritage.”
They thanked the Loudoun Hall Trustees for their confidence and care over decades, and invited organisations to contact them for unique venue hire, adding: “This is just the beginning. Watch this space!”
