Asda has announced plans to redevelop its existing Park Royal superstore in north-west London into a new town centre development featuring a 60,000 square foot flagship store. The proposal includes up to 1,500 new homes, electric vehicle charging points, a 35-storey apartment block, fitness facilities, and a community hub.
First Redevelopment of an Established Store Site
This marks the first time Asda has planned to redevelop an established store site. The company described the project as representing one of the largest land deals of the last couple of years. Of the 1,500 homes proposed, approximately 500 are designated as affordable housing.
"This allows us the opportunity to better serve local communities like Park Royal, with a new flagship store fit for the future, whilst creating windfall sites for housing delivery," said Ian Lawrence, head of mixed-use developments at Asda.
Planning Application Timeline
Work on the planning application is underway and is scheduled to be submitted later this year. Asda confirmed that its existing Park Royal Superstore will remain open while the new development is under construction.
The supermarket chain recently opened its 479th Asda Express store, bringing its total number of UK sites to 1,000. Asda also plans to open standalone locations across the country as part of its ongoing growth ambition, according to The Sun.
