Arsenal are ready to reignite their interest in Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa despite the two clubs being someway apart in their valuation of the player.
Konsa has just enjoyed his best season to date, helping Villa win the Europa League and playing a key role in England's World Cup journey, which saw them make the semi-finals.
Failed earlier bid
The Gunners, who have wasted no time in bolstering their ranks following their Premier League success, saw a move for Konsa earlier this summer fail to take off. That owed to the fact they only wanted to pay £30m for the 28-year-old - whilst Villa wanted double that.
Arsenal accept they will need to significantly improve their original offer if they are to sign Konsa, reports the BBC, but any move is also contingent on Villa being prepared to let their defender go, especially if their price isn't met.
Defensive need
Mikel Arteta's desire to add a centre-half is likely motivated by William Saliba's injury, which he picked up whilst playing for France. His partnership with Gabriel is among Europe's best, but beyond them there is a lack of elite depth. Konsa's versatility is also seen as a major plus.
The England defender remains on holiday having been afforded an extended break due to his World Cup involvement. He was not in the Villa squad that played PSG in the UEFA Super Cup.
Contract situation
Konsa has two years remaining on his contract at Villa Park and the Midlands side are eager to extend his deal. However his transfer value could drop off in the coming months if he does not agree fresh terms.
Unai Emery's side have already shown they are prepared to let their first-team stars leave, especially if they feel the price is right. Morgan Rogers joined Chelsea in a British record move whilst Youri Tielemans was allowed to join Manchester United. Lucas Digne has also returned to PSG.
Arsenal have successfully signed Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle this summer whilst Greek star Christos Tzolis has also been added. No major defensive additions have been made as of yet.
