United Airlines has announced a significant overhaul of its MileagePlus frequent-flyer program, introducing sweeping changes that will impact millions of travelers. The new system, set to take effect on April 2, 2026, is designed to incentivize customers to sign up for United co-branded credit or debit cards while scaling back benefits for those who do not.
Rewarding Loyalty with Enhanced Benefits
According to the airline, the revamp aims to reward its most loyal customers and encourage more flyers to obtain United credit cards. Andrew Nocella, United's Chief Commercial Officer, emphasized that the program is structured to provide the best benefits to dedicated patrons. "The most rewarding way to fly United is as a MileagePlus member, and the best way to get the most value from the MileagePlus program is to have one of our credit or debit cards," he stated.
Mileage Earning Rates Shift Dramatically
Under the new framework, primary MileagePlus cardholders will earn up to twice as many miles per dollar spent on United flights compared to non-cardholders. Specifically, cardholders will accrue six miles per dollar spent, with additional bonuses if they use their card to purchase tickets. In contrast, travelers without a co-branded United credit card will see their earnings reduced to three miles per dollar spent, down from the current five miles.
Furthermore, general members who do not hold a United credit card will soon earn zero miles when traveling on basic economy tickets. Elite MileagePlus status holders will continue to earn miles at higher rates, but the disparity between cardholders and non-cardholders is set to widen significantly.
Additional Perks and Discounts
United cardholders can also anticipate receiving at least a 10 percent discount when booking flights using points or miles. The airline plans to display these discounted prices prominently, allowing customers to visualize the potential savings associated with holding a United card. This transparency is intended to highlight the financial advantages of participating in the loyalty program.
Impact on Frequent Flyers
It remains unclear how many members of the MileagePlus program are not co-branded United cardholders, but the changes are expected to affect a substantial portion of the airline's customer base.
